Kanzelwand, Hammerspitze, Hochgehrenspitze 2016-10-16
This is a mountain tour along the ridges of Kanzelwand - Walser Hammerspitze - Hochgehrenspitze - Oberstdorfer Hammerspitze, descending at Fiderepass and returning to the starting point in Riezlern. In total it offers at least three summits, around 13 km and 560 vertical meters if starting from Kanzelwand upper station and ending back in Riezlern at the lower lift station. It is a scenic tour along the German-Austrian border with some interesting sections of scrambling along the way.
We have tried this ridge in spring conditions previously, but never quite made it with snow. Today, we were lucky with perfect conditions: Dry ground, blue sky! It soon emerged as one of our best hikes this year, even trail run-friendly at times. It is definitely recommendable for surefooted hikers, though probably popular in high season due to the lift access. The airy sections are comparable to the Hindelanger ferrata (that is, mostly non-belayed). Going roped-in may be a choice if uncertain.
