Alpgundkopf ski tour, Kleinwalsertal 2015-02-10
This is a nice alternative for those who have a lift card for the Kanzelwand Fellhorn skiing area. We start with the first lift to Kanzelwand and put the skins on for the short hike up behind Kanzelwand summit. From there, we ski down to the south, trying not to loose too much height toward Warmatsgundal valley. Instead we keep right, and putting the skins back on we ascend Alpgundkopf (Fidererscharte is a nice alternative). The last part to the summit is steep, some 40 degrees. With an avalanche warning level 3, distance is kept until we reach the Alpgundscharte saddle. We leave our skis here, unknowing that it's actually possible to ski down from the summit. This we learn from the four other persons doing this summit today. We watch them skiing down and then return on foot to our own skis. The descent is wonderful in light snow, all the way to the long and flat Warmatsgundtal, where lots of skating and pushing is called for. Arriving at last at the Fellhorn lift system, we end the day by ascending Fellhorn by lift and by foot, following the ridge to Fellbühel, where a long butter snow descent awaits. (There's a sign marking the allowed area - do not go freeriding beyond!)
