Höferspitze ski tour, 2015-03-06
Often the morning avalanche report is very predictable, but today the risk was assessed higher than we had expected. Unfortunately, we already had a bunch of high risk days this winter (as in most regions of the Alps). With the standard options done and repeated, we opted for Höferspitze from Baad. Now this tour contains steep sections; the first exposed to a north facing, snow collecting crest above, and the second being the final climb to the north ridge of Höferspitze. To do the tour on a day with (3) was almost stretching it, at least for us. We saw fresh avalanche tracks and other signs here and there, and kept great distances on the steep sections. On the other hand, we had the luxury of being completely alone on this normally quite crowded mountain - even on a brilliant day like this. No wind, powder snow and a beautifully corniced ridge which was curiously overhanging to both east and west.
