Walser Hammerspitze ski tour and Hochgehrenspitze attempt 2015-02-11
An ascent of Walser Hammerspitze (previously also called Schüsser) from Schwendle (Mittelberg), with a partial descent, then an attempt on Hochgehrenspitze from ist northeast ridge (which is not a marked way for ski touring). This was a really warm day, so we did not stay around for long anywhere. Grass and rocks were laid bare at the ridge between Hammerspitze and Hochgehrenspitze, but otherwise there was enough snow. On attempting to ascend Hochgehrenspitze we followed in one person's tracks up to 50 m below the summit cross. To that point the climbing had been exposed but easy. Like those before us, we then decided to turn around because of a giant, precarious snow cornice followed by steeper rock. We skied down more or less along the tracks; the snow was very heavy as expected from two very warm days. Getting through the steep forest further down was not very enjoyable...
