Windecksattel ski tour, Kleinwalsertal 2015-02-14
On a nice Saturday in winter, you can be sure to find a lot of people ascending Toreck. Even when the snow is terribly hard on its lower slopes after sunny days with snow melting and cold nights of refreezing, like today. Ski crampons (Harscheisen) would have been comfortable through the rather steep forest for early starters. Sandra opted for the neighbouring tour to Windecksattel (sharing the first half of ascent with that of Toreck), being essentially alone for the complete two hours of the tour. The valley to Windecksattel, Mahdtal, is shaded by the long ridge of Toreck, and thus the snow keeps fresh longer. Sometimes a huge snow cornice at the top of Windecksattel can make this tour difficult or impossible, but today the conditions were very good. The snow was enjoyable, although understandably not all fresh anymore. Keeping far to the right on descending Mahdtal is a good idea. A nice training tour for those with little time, or those who just like to be alone.
